OVERVIEW

In Hong Kong, individuals have the option to change their name or the name of their child at any time through a deed poll. This legal document is typically necessary when seeking to officially change one’s name on important documents such as the Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID), passport, or driving license.

WHAT IS A DEED POLL?

A Deed Poll is commonly used for changing name officially. It is a legal document that binds a person who has expressly changed their name. A Deed Poll can only be executed by an adult aged 18 years or older, and there are no restrictions on the number of times a person can change their name.

RESTRICTIONS IN CHANGE OF NAME

When choosing a new name, it must not:

  • exceed 6 Chinese characters;
  • exceed 60 English characters;
  • contain Non-English characters;
  • contain any punctuation marks; or
  • contain vulgar or foul language

If we have any reason to believe that a change of name is done with the intention to commit fraud, we will refuse to entertain such deed poll application or witness its execution.

CHANGING NAME OF YOUR CHILD / MINOR

First Name / Given Name

For a child under 11 years old, parents can change their child’s given name by applying directly at the Births Registries in Hong Kong. A parent of the child must attend in person to make a declaration and present the child’s original birth certificate. After the age of 11, a deed poll is necessary to change the child’s given name, and anyone with custody of the child can arrange for this change. Surname / Family Name

A deed poll is always required to change the surname of a child. However, any change to the surname of a child must be done by written consent by everyone who has parental responsibility for the child in question.

If all necessary documentation is in order, a deed poll can be prepared, executed and witnessed within 2 hours. Our fee is HKD300 is per deed poll.
